Its a lot compared to many cards, but its incredible value when you start to look at what the Little Mermaid villain is capable of bringing to your Amethyst deck
If you play it on Turn 1, your opponent either spends a removal spell on your one-mana 1/1, which pretty much guarantees youre trading up, or you get to untap and ramp into 4 available mana on Turn 3
Whereas if you saved it, because of duplicate protection, that pack would open a Rare you didn't have yet
Many MtG mutate cards have abilities that trigger when they (or another card) mutates
It amasses more of a board presence, draws you cards, or deals burn damage
