While not banned during the time of Mount Doom, the set's infamous Galadriel, Lady Redeemed (10R11) did not trail far behind and was banned shortly after Shadows.
His mechanics are definitely eye-opening, but other than instructing you to track the countdown using his card art, they lie well within the range of constructed build-around wincon. Itll always take at least five spells to doom your opponent, and the odd rules templating around the countdown does at least stop abuse from Vampire Hexmage and the like
While you might be able to assess Rhystic Study as an immediate threat, and remove it (or failing that, encourage everyone at the table to pay and/or swing at the controller), not every player at the table has such good threat assessment
