The Final Fantasy versions dont quite have the statlines to dominate developed boards, but they still give every deck a reasonable late-game punch basically for free while reducing the rate of mana and color screw
So long as you control no face-up cards, it can be activated to destroy either all backrow, or all Attack position Monsters the opponent controls
But right now, the biggest difference is that placing damage counters is an effect, not damage
While the rules may say any non-land card is a spell, decks that rely on lots of instants and sorceries just feel more wizardly as opposed to summoning a bunch of creatures to fight for you
