In general, defensive free spells are much less problematic than offensive free spells are, and being able to counter a Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Dragon's Rage Channeler, or Colossus Hammer no matter what colors you are playing might sound appealing
Then you'll get deathtouch for a turn, and you'll likely swing through a defense that doesn't want to trade down
